Writing a Retailer Specification (FETAC)

Why Attend?

Producing product specifications is often a hurdle for food businesses seeking to get their product listed with a retailer. The aim of this 1-day workshop is to enable participants to understand the process of retailer listing from the initial stages of contact with a multiple to producing a product specifications and on-going support. In some instances a retailer may want to own brand your product – that is sell your product under their name and label. This means you will need to complete a detailed product specification This 1-day workshop consists of information and practical sessions, which are used to help communicate the skills and knowledge needed to write specifications for own label products.

Who Should Attend?

Quality Control personnel, owner/managers and those with responsibility for completing product specifications in their food business. For food companies who are already supplying retailers with own label products or those who wish to move into this area. Ideally participants should be involved in writing specifications.

Course Content

The 1-day training workshop is interactive and includes demonstrations and presentations. The following topics are covered:

  • Introduction to specifications
  • Product details
  • Supplier details
  • Packaging and Labelling details
  • Microbiological, chemical analysis
  • Specification writing exercise

Course Tutors

The training course will be delivered by trainers from Ashtown Food Research Centre, Teagasc. All tutors have relevant qualifications and extensive experience of the operation of food safety and quality management systems in the food sector.

Assessment/Certification

This FETAC credited course is assessed by means of a short written examination and submission of an assignment.

Ashtown Food Research Centre, Teagasc is a FAS registered training organisation and is recognised by Enterprise Ireland and other national organisations. Funding may be available for the course. Please contact us for details.
