Revolutionary Changes in Agricultural and Horticultural Training

The Teagasc Director, Dr Liam Downey has appealed to young people interested in careers in agriculture and horticulture to apply through the Central Applications Office (CAO) for the new third level courses which are being introduced for the first time in 2001.
Dr Downey said the upgrading of Teagasc courses to third level status represents a revolutionary change in agricultural and horticultural training.
''The new third level certificate and diplomas have received national accreditation from the National Council of Educational Awards (NCEA) and bring agricultural training into the mainstream education system for the first time ever. Starting next September, these courses will be provided by new partnerships involving Teagasc colleges and institutes of technology'', he said.
''They are geared to meet the training needs of future farmers, horticulturists and skilled workers in all aspects of the industry. Students who successfully complete these courses will also have the option to progress to university degree level'', he added.
New Agriculture Course
The new two year National Certificate in Agriculture is being provided by the following Teagasc college/institute of technology partnerships:
Kildalton Agricultural College and Waterford Institute of Technology (CAO Course Code: WD098)
Clonakilty Agricultural College and Cork Institute of Technology (CAO Course Code: CR010)
Mountbellew Agricultural College and Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology (CAO Course Code: GA049)
New Horticulture Course
The new three year National Diploma in Horticulture is being provided by the following Teagasc college/institute of technology partnerships:
Kildalton Horticultural College and Waterford Institute of Technology (CAO Course Code: WD 096)
Warrenstown Horticultural College and Blanchardstown Institute of Technology (CAO Course Code: BN 007)
College of Horticulture, Botanic Gardens and Blanchardstown Institute of Technology (CAO Course Code: BN008)
Young people interested in these courses should apply to the CAO by Thursday, February 1st.
