Animal Movement Permits Introduced

Issued 5thMarch 2001

A new permit system covering animals going direct from farms to meat plants has been introduced by the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development. All other movement of animals has been banned since 6pm, Saturday, March 3rd.

Farmers selling cattle, sheep, pigs, goats or deer to meat plants can only do so with a movement permit. The permit system comes into effect on Tuesday, March 6th.

Permit Forms (FMDI) are available from local Teagasc and Department of Agriculture offices and post offices or can be downloaded from the Department website. Farmers should rigidly follow the following process when availing of the permit system.

  1. Ring your meat plant and get and a Booking Number
  2. Ring your local Teagasc office and get a Permit Number.
  3. Allow at least an hour to elapse before embarking on your journey to the meat plant. This will enable the details of your Permit to be forwarded to the Gardai.
  • Make sure that your completed Permit Form and the relevant cards/passports accompany the animals on the delivery vehicle.
  • Permits are strictly farmer specific. One permit only will be issued for any vehicle.
