Red Alert on Foot and Mouth

The confirmed Foot and Mouth disease outbreak on a farm in County Louth has ensured red alert on FMD controls throughout the country, said Tom Kirley, Head of Advisory Services in Teagasc. Mr Kirley urged farmers to operate Teagasc's 12 point protection plan
All farms must remain closed-off to outsiders and effective disinfectant procedures should be followed.
He announced that all Teagasc training courses at colleges and local Teagasc centres will continue to be suspended until further notice.
Also, all Teagasc national and local events remain cancelled and visits to farmers by Teagasc's 550 advisory staff remain suspended.
Farmers can avail of advice by appointment at local Teagasc offices. The special helplines which have operated for the past three weeks will remain in operation seven days a week from 9.00am to 5.00pm. The helplines are operating in each county.
