Major Conferences Examine Beef Prospects
Issued 24thOctober 2001
The outlook for beef over the coming months will be one of the key items discussed at seven regional conferences being run by Teagasc and Bord Bia over the next two weeks.
The conferences, which get underway in Tullamore on Tuesday next, 30th October, will feature speakers from Teagasc, Bord Bia and meat factories, will provide topical advice for farmers on production, premium and marketing issues.
Announcing details, Bernard Smyth, Chief Beef Adviser with Teagasc, said one of the most important issues at farm level now is the efficient production of beef under 30 months.
''All the best priced consumer markers are now demanding beef from animals under 30 months and a number of markets are specifying that animals must be under 24 months. Farmers attending the forthcoming conferences will get fully updated on how to beat the 30 months barrier'', he said.
The conferences will also provide important advice on coping with the new changes in suckler cow premium applications and on the more restrictive stocking rates for eligibility for the special beef premium.
Teagasc nutrition experts will advise on how to maximise animal performance over the winter feeding period and Bord Bia market analysts will give an update on short and medium term prospects for beef exports. Senior representatives from the meat factories will detail the requirements of the major consumer markets.
All conferences start at 8.00pm.
