Teagasc Young Researcher Award

Carol Newman, a research scientist from the Teagasc National Food Centre, Castleknock, Dublin has won the Teagasc Young Researcher of the Year Award for 2001.
From Kildare town, Carol's presentation of her work on the consumer factors influencing expenditure on meat and prepared meals won her the top prize in the annual seminar for young Teagasc researchers. She was presented with her award by the Minister of State for Science and Technology, Mr Noel Treacy.
A graduate of the Department of Economics, Trinity College, Dublin, Carol pursued her Ph.D studies at the Teagasc National Food Centre, Castleknock under the joint supervision of Dr Maeve Henchion, Teagasc and Professor Alan Matthews, TCD.
She was one of 100 young post-graduate students employed by Teagasc under the Walsh Fellowships Scheme, named to commemorate the late Dr Tom Walsh, the first Director of the agriculture and food research services. This makes Teagasc one of the biggest employers in the country of post-graduate students.
The 100 post-graduates are working mainly at Teagasc research centres and are jointly supervised by senior Teagasc researchers and university scientists. All nine universities are involved in the programmes as well as institutes of technology. Links have also been established with universities in Europe, the US and New Zealand.
The Teagasc Director, Dr Liam Downey, said the programme is now a crucial component of Teagasc's overall research activity in agriculture and food.
`'It has also led to beneficial collaboration with universities at home and abroad as well as making a significant contribution to the development of the next generation of Irish scientists'', he said.
