Teagasc - The Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority

Nine CAO Courses on Offer

Issued 16th January 2002

The Director of Teagasc, Dr Liam Downey, has announced that nine courses in agriculture and horticulture, provided jointly by Teagasc colleges and institutes of technology partnerships, are available on this year's Central Applications Office (CAO) list.

''The third level courses which were introduced for the first time in 2001 represent a revolutionary change in agricultural and horticultural training. A total of 150 students are now participating in the new courses which are geared to meet the training needs of future farmers, horticulturists and skilled workers in all aspects of the industry'', he said.

Dr Downey said the new Diploma and Certificate courses are being accompanied by a substantial modernisation programme in agricultural and horticultural colleges. Last year, €7.6 was spent on college investment and a further €6.35m has been allocated by the Government this year.

''This expenditure will ensure that students participating in agricultural and horticultural training will have facilities on a par with the best internationally'', he said.

''With the upgrading of courses, there are now exciting career opportunities in agri-business and in the thriving amenity horticulture area. An important component of the new course structure is that participants can progress right up to university degree level. I would therefore appeal to anyone interested in a rewarding rural-based career to give serious consideration to these third level courses'', he added.
