Open Day Displays New Organic Blueprints
Issued 20th June, 2002
New blueprints for organic food production will be displayed by Teagasc at the National Open Day on Organic farming at Johnstown Castle Research Centre, Wexford, on Thursday 4 July from 1.00pm to 5.00pm.
Dr Noel Culleton of Teagasc said the open day offers a unique opportunity to get the latest information from Teagasc's comprehensive organic research programme as well as professional advice on the economics of organic products and on market prospects.
''Organic farming is still in its infancy in Ireland, accounting for less than 1% of the farming area and under 0.5% of total food sales. While the number of organic producers has increased in recent years a significant proportion of organic produce is still imported'', he said.
''With organic food sales projected to treble over the next four years, there are real opportunities for some farmers to make the transition to organic farming. However, unless it is properly planned, organic production can be a recipe for disaster'', he added.
The open day will outline the vital aspects in soil fertility, grass management, animal health and welfare and environmental management which make up successful organic farming.
The event is open to existing and potential organic farmers and experts from Teagasc, the Department of Agriculture and Food and UCD and will be available to deal with all questions.
