New Organic Book Launched by Teagasc
Issued 26 June, 2002
A new book containing detailed advice on all aspects of organic farming has been published by Teagasc.
Compiled and edited by Teagasc experts at the organic research unit at Johnstown Castle Research Centre, Wexford, the 160 pages book gives the full story on the production and economics of organic milk, meat, cereals and vegetables and also outlines market prospects for organic food.
Titled the 'Principles of Successful Organic Farming, it draws on the expertise in Teagasc, the Department of Agriculture and Food and the universities in offering practical advice to existing and potential organic producers. It contains over 30 articles on critical areas such as soil fertility, grassland management, animal health and welfare, environment, finances and markets. Readers can also get key contacts in state agencies and the organic organisations.
Dr Noel Culleton of Teagasc Johnstown Castle and one of the co-authors said there are currently 17 million organic food consumers in Europe and, as a food exporting nation, Ireland cannot afford to ignore this market.
''While organic farming is still in its infancy in Ireland, it is projected to more than treble over the coming years. Farmers who decide to make the transition to organic will find this book a useful guide'', he said.
Many of the contributors to the new book will be available at the national open day on organic farming which is being run by Teagasc at Johnstown Castle Research Centre, Wexford on Thursday, 4 July.
'Principles of Successful Organic Farming' is available from the Publications Office, Teagasc, 19 Sandymount Avenue, Dublin 4, price €15 or can be ordered online using our online ordering facility.
