Teagasc Runs Special Careers Events

4 October, 2002

Eight special careers events are being run in agricultural and horticultural colleges between Tuesday 15th and Thursday 24th October.

The events will provide a unique opportunity for young people interested in careers in agriculture, horticulture and the agri-food industry to get the full story on new Teagasc courses and on the wide range of job opportunities available.

They take place against the background of radical changes in Teagasc courses. Since last year, all courses have been brought into the mainstream education system and a number of new third level courses have been included on the Central Applications Office (CAO) list.

The new courses have already resulted in an increase in participants in Teagasc training. The number of students in third level and vocational courses in agricultural and horticultural colleges is up by almost 10% this year. This is in contrast to a continuing decline in numbers during the mid and late 1990s. Numbers attending third level courses, run by Teagasc colleges and institutes of technology, have increased by almost 50% this year.

Paddy Browne, Head of Education with Teagasc, said students, parents and career guidance teachers attending the eight special careers events will have the opportunity to get first-hand information on all Teagasc courses.

"They will also experience the upgraded college facilities, which have benefited from a major new investment programme over the past two years. This brings facilities in both agricultural and horticultural colleges in Ireland up to the highest international standards".

"Another big attraction of the upgraded Teagasc courses is the opportunity to progress right up to university degree level. This is clearly one of the major contributing factors to increased numbers this year", he said.

All eight events run from 10.30am to 2.00pm. The following is the full schedule and contact numbers/emails:
