Quality Beef Farm on Show

28 April, 2003

One of Ireland's top beef farms is the venue for a national open day on 8th May.

Padraig and Margaret Doyle, Bree, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford took the overall award in the Bord Bia Quality Beef Producer competition in 2002. The secrets of their success will be unveiled at the special open day, organised by Teagasc.

The Doyle's run a superb 90 cow suckler herd, with male progeny finished as bulls at 16 months and heifers sold to the Petitt supermarket group at 18-20 months. The herd consists of Limousin cross cows bred to Limousin bulls. Winter feed consists of top quality silage and home-grown barley and fodder beet, supplemented with a 'balancer'.

Padraig took over the home farm in the mid 1990's following a period as a farm manager in the UK. He is an active member of a suckler discussion group under the auspices of the joint Teagasc/Wexford Farmer's Co-op Mart beef development programme.

The open day runs from 1pm to 6pm on Thursday, 8th May and all farmers are welcome.
