Teagasc Announces New Third Level Course

29 May, 2003

A new National Diploma in Agriculture, provided by Teagasc Kildalton College, Piltown, Co. Kilkenny and Waterford Institute of Technology will start next September.

The new course is a further enhancement of agricultural training which has undergone a fundamental restructuring during the past two years.

Since September 2001, three Teagasc college/institute of technology partnerships have provided a National Certificate in Agriculture. The partnerships are: Kildalton College and Waterford Institute of Technology, Clonakilty College and Cork Institute of Technology, Mountbellew College and Galway Institute of Technology.

The first participants in this two-year course are now about to graduate and those who receive a merit grade or higher are eligible to apply for the new one year National Diploma in Agriculture.

Frank Murphy, Principal of Teagasc Kildalton College, said the new course will further boost the career opportunities of third-level students by expanding their business, managerial, environmental and IT skills.

"As well as adding vital skills to young people wishing to take over the management of commercial farms, the new course will also be an excellent training for those who are interested in pursuing careers in a variety of occupations in the processing, marketing and services sector of the agriculture and food industry."

"Participants who complete the National Diploma in Agriculture will also have the opportunity to progress to university degree level. Progression is now an integral part of all Teagasc training, ensuring that participants have opportunities as good as those available anywhere internationally," said Frank Murphy.

Welcoming the announcement of the first ever Diploma in Agriculture course, Paddy Browne, Head of Training with Teagasc, said he was confident other similar courses will be announced by the other Teagasc college/institute of technology partnerships in the near future.

Students interested in applying for the new course should contact the admissions office at Waterford Institute of Technology; Ph: 051 30263; Email: enquiries@wit.ie. Applications should be submitted to the college by Friday, 13th June.
