Teagasc Launches New Hedgerow Leaflets

The Minister of State for Agriculture and Food, Liam Aylward, has launched a new series of Teagasc leaflets on hedgerow management for farmers.
The series consists of four leaflets which detail the best planting, trimming and management techniques for hedgerows as well as outlining important safety measures. They have been produced by Catherine Keena, Teagasc Countryside Management Specialist, in association with Networks for Nature.
Catherine Keena said the new leaflets are part of the Teagasc campaign to increase awareness in the value of well-managed hedgerows to farming, wildlife and the countryside.
“While hedgerow management has improved in recent years, largely due to the Rural Environment Protection Scheme (REPS), many hedgerows are still poorly maintained and many farms would benefit from the addition of new hedgerows,” said Catherine Keena.
She advised that all hedgerows should be trimmed to a triangular shape, leaving the peak as high as possible. Cutting stems above the previous cut will encourage vigorous dense growth and leaving mature trees at irregular intervals provides roosting sites and food for wildlife.
The leaflets also provide specific guidelines for laying or coppicing hedgerows that have grown up, lost their dense base and are in need of rejuvenation. Catherine Keena urged that hedgerow management should not be carried between March and September in order to protect nesting birds.
