Greater Need than Ever for Farm Training – Teagasc

Mr. Donal Carey, Director of Education and Development in Teagasc speaking at the announcement of the winners of the FBD Farm Start Awards to-day (Tuesday 28 June, 2005) said that there was never a greater need than now for farm training and education.

He said, “The new scenario post decoupling has positioned technology in its rightful place in farming. Successful full-time and part-time farmers in the future will efficiently manage their enterprises in a sustainable way. This will involve the adoption of researched technology driven practices on their farms”.

Continuing, Mr. Carey said, “There is strong evidence that well trained farmers are better positioned to adapt to change and to capitalise on opportunities to increase income”.

“Farming”, he said, “has a vital role to play in our economy. Successful farmers of the future, like these FBD award winners, must be well trained and must have the skills necessary to operate with increased focus on technical excellence”.

“With this in mind, Teagasc is continuing to adopt training programmes to meet the needs of all categories of farmers”, concluded Mr. Carey.
