Irish Horticultural Sector receives a major boost

"A total of 40 nursery producers were approved for investment aid under the latest round of the Department of Agriculture & Food’ Scheme of Investment for the development of the commercial horticulture sector”, said Paddy Gleeson, Teagasc's nursery stock specialist, speaking at the Kildare Growers Show at the Punchestown Event Centre in Co Kildare to-day ( Thursday 21s t July 2005 ).

Mr Gleeson said that the total investment approved under the scheme was 3.83 million euros.

“With the output of the hardy nursery stock industry currently valued at 47 million euros, there is a continued investment in infrastructure and mechanisation required to enable the sector to participate in an increasingly competitive marketplace” said Mr Gleeson.

Speaking about the show Mr Gleeson said the quality and range of the products displayed at the show were of an exceptionally high standard.

"The exhibit received many accolades from trade visitors from EU countries. With the growth in the landscape industry and expansion in multiple retail outlets throughout the country, there is still a high level of optimism from an industry that has to compete in an increasingly more global marketplace," concluded Mr Gleeson.
