Technologies for the Future
The Teagasc Research exhibit is titled 'Technologies for the Future', displaying some of the cutting edge research that is ongoing in the organisation. Genomics is an emerging field of biology, and this technology is utilised for the improvement of animal and plant productive efficiency and food quality. Microbial genomics can also be used as a tool to manipulate the flavour and sensory characteristics of dairy foods.
We now live in a time of increased emphasis on healthy eating. Reflecting this Teagasc Research has a strong programme on functional foods and neutraceuticals, and this area is on display here in Kildalton today.
The availability and cost of labour is becoming an increasingly important issue on dairy farms. A joint collaborative project between Teagasc Research and Dublin City University will be on display that is aimed at developing a combined system for automated cow cleaning prior to milking, robotic attachment of milking units, use of image analysis to identify cows in heat, and automatic drafting of cows in heat for insemination. In addition, an ongoing project is examining the potential usefulness of image analysis for identification of cows about to calve.
Spatial analysis and mapping is an area where Teagasc Research has a strong presence, and this technology is now being linked with information on soil type to identify areas of environmental risk.
