Teagasc Tillage Course to Improve Efficiency

An Advanced Teagasc Tillage Crop Management Course to provide farmers with the management skills to improve efficiency and profitability will commence in October next.

This advanced tillage course is aimed at specialised tillage farmers and will focus on key areas such as crop nutrition, financial management, pesticide application, machinery developments and renewable energy.

The training course will be delivered between Kildalton College and Oak Park Research Centre and will run from October 2007 to December 2008.

Jim O Mahony, Teagasc tillage crops programme manager said: "With current optimism in the cereals sector and the improved returns from crop production, the timing of this course is most opportune. However, despite better returns from the 2007 harvest, it is important for tillage growers to remain firmly focused on improving efficiency and managing crops to increase profits. This Advanced Course in Tillage Crop Management will equip farmers to achieve that and manage increased scale in the future."

James Maloney, lecturer at Kildalton College said: "The 24-day course is very practical and will monitor the development of crops throughout the growing seasons. Key challenges and opportunities facing tillage farmers will be addressed and the course also includes a foreign study tour visiting commercial growers and research stations."
