Research & Innovation
Teagasc is a leading research institute in Ireland, undertaking innovative research in the areas of bioscience, agriculture production, food, the environment and the rural economy.
The Teagasc 2030 Foresight report, addresses the changes that may take place over the next 20 years and outlines the importance of knowledge to the future of agriculture, the food industry, the environment and to the economy of rural areas.
At the eight Teagasc research centres located throughout Ireland, over 750 scientific researchers, technical staff and postgraduate students, are working on innovative and challenging projects, seeking answers to the scientific questions that are continuously emerging.
As Teagasc play a central role in creating knowledge for the agriculture and food sectors, it has continuously invested in new state of the art facilities and in the “human capital” through the Teagasc Vision programme, to guide the industry and aid the development of a knowledge economy in Ireland.
Food Research in Teagasc is carried out at the Moorepark Food Research Centre and the Ashtown Food Research Centre. Research programmes on food safety, foods for health, food ingredients, food cultures, meat technology, dairy technology, prepared consumer foods, food industry training and market research are pursued.
Agricultural Research continues to evolve with new research on animal bioscience and crops bioscience expected to play an increasingly important role. Teagasc’s research programmes in areas such as dairy, beef, sheep, cereals, horticulture and pigs help to scientifically underpin the commercial activity in these sectors, while maintaining sound environmental practices.
Research into other land use enterprises like forestry and energy crops also provide a knowledge base on which these emerging sectors can develop.
Research covering the economics of the rural economy, includes commodity market analysis, policy analysis and research relating to farm structures, farm viability and agricultural incomes. Disciplines such as geography and sociology address other issues of relevance to rural development.
Teagasc places great emphasis on collaboration with other research bodies, particularly in Europe and the USA. This collaboration helps to ensure that the organisation remains at the forefront of new scientific developments in each field of research.
