Walsh Fellowship Terms and Conditions (Summary)
Rates and method of payment
The Fellowship rate is €21,000* per annum (inclusive of all fees). In certain cases additional amounts will be paid to cover bench fees and limited travel.
Payments are made quarterly from Teagasc National Office (Dublin) to colleges. The Fellowship is, subject to certain limits and conditions (Income Tax Act 1967, Section 353 and Taxes Consolidation Act 1997, Section 193), regarded as a tax-free scholarship. Students may also be eligible to apply for IRCSET (formerly Enterprise Ireland) grants, or for Local Authority support.
*The stipend increased from €17,000 to €21,000/annum from 1 January 2007.
Duration of Fellowships
Fellowships are for the duration of a Master’s (1½-2 years) or PhD (3 years maximum or 4 years in the case of Structured PhD programme) programme and usually start in the Autumn term (1 October). Fellowships are renewable annually on receipt of satisfactory progress reports.
Supervision of postgraduate students
Supervision of postgraduates on Walsh Fellowships is the joint responsibility of the college and Teagasc supervisors. They should meet and discuss progress regularly (at least twice yearly) with the student.
Additionally, the college and Teagasc supervisors of each Fellowship holder are recommended to convene a small ‘Fellowship Committee’ of two or three additional scientists who, with them, would meet the student and who would help in the discussion of the project at start-up and again, at a later date, if it is proposed to extend the project from a Master’s to a PhD programme. The members of the Fellowship committee should, where possible, be available to the student for discussion and assistance throughout the period of the Fellowship, and particularly as the project nears completion.
Meetings of the Fellowship committee should be minuted to give clarity and transparency to the discussions with the student and as evidence of support and supervision.
In cases where postgraduate students conduct their fieldwork off-campus and remote from a Teagasc centre, more formal arrangements should be made for regular discussions/meetings between the students and their supervisors.
