Teagasc - The Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority

Career Profile

Name: Rona Ward

Mature Student from Dublin City on Bachelor of Science in Horticulture at Teagasc College of Amenity Horticulture, National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin Dublin 9

Work Experience

Before taking up the course I worked in a variety of jobs – Catering, Shop work and Sewing Factories.

My job

I always had an interest in gardening and decided to have a career in this area after completing a certificate course in horticulture. I love the practical work. I found studying in the Botanic Gardens very helpful for learning plants.

There is a difficulty of managing time and returning to study as a mature student. I would like to get employed in the Public Authority Parks when I complete the course probably because I like working outdoors and interacting with the general public. There are a number of mature students in my class and the mix of young and mature works very well – each helping one another – I have made plenty of friends.
